History of Alamo Sewer and Water General Improvement District
In October 1972, the Alamo Sewer and Water General Improvement District was formed. Prior to this, it had been known as the Alamo Farmstead. Immediately after being formed, the District made plans to put in a town sewer system. At this time, the first board was formed. After much work and planning, the sewer system was finally in place and working by the Summer of 1976. The next project the board set out to do was upgrade the water system and get a larger storage tank for the water, which they were able to accomplish. Several wells were drilled over the next few years in hopes of finding good water.
In 1990, the state mandated that all Sewer and Water operators be certified. It was decided to hire its first full-time employee. Up until this time, all water meters were read quarterly. With the hiring of a full-time employee, the meters were then read monthly.
A home had been used as the office and payments were also accepted at the power office. During the summer of 1998, the company, Pacific Horizons, who had been building the JFDI building was finished and wanted to sell the trailer they had been using for an office. The board purchased the trailer and had it set up on land that belonged to Alamo Sewer and Water, which was located next to the clinic. In October 1999, the office was moved into the new building. The first board meeting was held in the new office on December 7, 1999.
The Industrial Well was deeded to us by the County in December 2006. We used this well for some time until January 2006 when the government mandated that the arsenic level of the water had to be at or below 10 ug/L (micrograms per liter) or ppb (parts per billion). At this point, we were no longer in compliance so we began test drilling for a new well with arsenic levels well below the limit so we could blend the water from both wells. The well was drilled on Sandhill Road in 2012. Our new office building was constructed next to the Sandhill Well and completed in October 2012.
